Futsal, handball, racquetball, MUGA:
the rest of the court family
Beyond the big four, the courts a US facility or school might build are futsal (a 25 to 42 by 16 to 25 meter hard-surface soccer pitch), outdoor handball (a 34 by 20 foot one-wall court), racquetball (a 40 by 20 by 20 foot enclosed room), a multi use games area or MUGA (a fenced hard court lined for several sports), and cricket practice nets. Each is a hard court built with the same base-slab-surface sequence as tennis, with its own dimensions, surface and enclosure.
The dimensions below are from each sport's governing body; the costs are US planning ranges in the same method as the rest of this site.

What does futsal court construction involve?
A hard, flat, non-abrasive surface at least 25 by 16 meters, ideally 40 by 20, with 3 by 2 meter goals anchored at each end and 1 to 2 meters of run-off. Outdoors that is a concrete slab with an acrylic coating, the same build as a basketball or tennis court; indoors it is a wood or synthetic sports floor in a hall with 7 meters of clear height.
Futsal court construction outdoors costs $60,000 to $180,000 depending on size, fencing and lighting; the slab is 2 to 3 times a tennis court's area at the international size. Futsal court cost indoors is a floor and goals in an existing hall ($150,000 to $400,000 for a full-size court with lighting and fit-out) or a new building at $100 to $150 per square foot on top. Many US futsal courts are lined on existing basketball courts; a 94 by 50 foot gym floor is 28.7 by 15.2 meters, which fits a minimum-size futsal court exactly.
What does handball court construction involve?
For the American one-wall game, a reinforced concrete or block wall 20 feet wide and 16 feet high, with a smooth, flat face, in front of a 34 by 20 foot acrylic-coated court with a short line 16 feet from the wall and sidelines extending past the court. Walls are built in banks back to back or side by side so one structure serves two to eight courts.
Handball court construction is a New York City parks tradition, and the same wall serves one-wall paddleball and wall ball. A single wall and court is $30,000 to $70,000; a bank of four sharing a double-sided wall is $90,000 to $180,000. Three-wall and four-wall handball use the racquetball court geometry. The wall must be plumb, smooth and crack-free; a bouncing ball finds every defect.
What does racquetball court construction involve?
A fully enclosed room 40 feet long, 20 feet wide and 20 feet high with all four walls and the ceiling in play, a hardwood floor, smooth panel or plaster walls and usually a glass back wall. Racquetball court construction is the same specialist trade as squash and uses the same wall and floor systems.
Racquetball court cost is $60,000 to $120,000 per court for the fit-out inside a building that already has 20 feet of clear height. The US has thousands of racquetball courts from the 1970s and 80s, many idle, and converting one to a squash court ($50,000 to $100,000) or into a pair of pickleball practice bays is now more common than building a new one. See squash court construction for the comparison.
What is a multi use games area, and what does MUGA construction cost?
A MUGA is a fenced hard court, typically 37 by 18.5 to 40 by 20 meters, with an acrylic or synthetic turf surface lined for several games (five-a-side soccer, basketball, netball, tennis) and a 3 meter rebound fence with recessed goals built into it. The term is British; the US equivalent is a fenced multi-sport court at a school or park.
MUGA construction costs $80,000 to $250,000 depending on size, the fence system (the rebound fence with integrated goals is the expensive part) and lighting. The surface is a standard acrylic sport coating on asphalt or a sand-dressed synthetic turf where soccer dominates. For the US version at residential scale, see backyard sport court; for school and park procurement, see sports court builders.
What does cricket net construction involve?
One or more lanes 3.66 meters wide and 22 to 25 meters long, surfaced with a synthetic cricket turf over a concrete slab or a compacted, bound base, enclosed by netting 3.5 to 4 meters high on a galvanized steel frame, with the bowler's run-up extending beyond the net. $15,000 to $30,000 per lane; a four-lane facility with lighting is $80,000 to $150,000.
The slab must be flat and consistent down the full length; the ball's bounce off the pitch is the whole point of practice. Cricket net construction is growing in US metros with large South Asian communities, usually at parks and community centers.
