A basketball court costs
$20,000 to $100,000 outdoors
Basketball court construction cost is $20,000 to $45,000 for a backyard half court on a 30 by 50 foot slab with modular tiles and an in-ground adjustable hoop, and $45,000 to $100,000 for a full 94 by 50 foot outdoor court. An indoor basketball court costs $150,000 to $400,000 for a hardwood floor, hoops and lighting inside an existing building, and $1 to $2 million including a new building.
The slab is 40 to 50 percent of an outdoor court. The hoop, which is what people price first, is 5 to 10 percent.

How much does a basketball court cost by size?
Cost scales with the slab, so a full court is roughly three times a backyard half court, not two. Indoor costs jump because hardwood, climate control and the building are each larger than the whole outdoor court.

How much does a half court basketball cost?
Half court basketball cost is $20,000 to $45,000 built on a new 30 by 50 foot slab with tiles and an in-ground adjustable hoop, or $14,000 to $30,000 with an acrylic surface. On an existing flat driveway or patio, a half court is the hoop and a stencil: $800 to $3,000.
A regulation half court is 47 by 50 feet, which few backyards can take and which costs $30,000 to $60,000. The 30 by 50 foot backyard version keeps the full key, the free throw line and a three-point arc that is cut off at the sidelines, which is what almost everyone builds. Sizes are on basketball court dimensions, and the lot questions on backyard basketball court.
How much does an indoor basketball court cost?
Indoor basketball court cost is $150,000 to $400,000 to fit out a full court in an existing building with a sprung maple floor, two hoops, lighting, line painting and basic HVAC, and $1 to $2 million for a new pre-engineered building with the court inside. A home gym half court on modular tiles in an existing barn or outbuilding is $40,000 to $90,000.
| Line | Low | High | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maple hardwood floor, sprung, 5,000 sq ft | $60,000 | $125,000 | $12–25 per sq ft; or modular tiles $35,000–60,000 |

| Lighting to 50–75 fc | $15,000 | $40,000 | High-bay LED |
| HVAC and dehumidification | $25,000 | $100,000 | Hardwood needs stable humidity |
| Lines, wall padding, scoreboard | $8,000 | $30,000 | |
| Design, permits, electrical | $15,000 | $50,000 | |
| Total, existing building | $130,000 | $375,000 | Before the building and its clear height (23 ft min, 25+ preferred) |
| New pre-engineered building, 6,000–8,000 sq ft | $700,000 | $1,500,000 | $100–180 per sq ft |
What lowers the cost of a basketball court?
Using an existing slab, choosing acrylic over tiles, laying tiles yourself over a contractor's slab, and sharing the court with other games so one slab does three jobs. What does not lower it: a thinner slab, skipping the hoop footing, or asphalt.
Acrylic over tiles saves $7,000 on a half court and $30,000 on a full court, at the cost of recoating every 5 to 8 years. DIY tile installation over a contractor's slab saves $4,000 to $8,000. Multi-sport lines, a pickleball court across the half court, cost $500 to $1,500 more and double what the slab is used for; see backyard sport court. Outdoor basketball court cost is lowest in the spring before paving season fills up.
